In the first Original Six game of the new year, the Bruins suffered their third consecutive loss since their win against the Flyers making them 1-5 in 2007. Although there were many opportunities for the Bruins throughout the game, and a good level of third period involvement, (the team's main issue currently), they were unable to secure the win and the game ended 3-1 to the Rangers. Michael Nylander scored first for New York, but the Bruins responded within a minute with a goal by a ricochet goal from Marc Savard in the first period. In the second, the game winning goal was scored by Martin Straka, his 24th of the season. The third period saw a strong Bruins team take to the ice, but a tripping penalty against the Bruins on a breakaway gave the Rangers a penalty shot which was scored by Jed Ortmeyer. Thomas was pulled in the last few minutes, but the B's were not able to gain enough momentum to tie the game up.
The Bruins continue to drop down the conference table and further away from a playoff position. I'm guessing it wasn't just the moustaches after all. The team is now in 13th place, however is only 4 points away from 8th place Tampa, still with four games in hand. Soon the advantage of having those extra games will be lost if the team don't start winning however.
Up next is a home-and-home with the 'Buffaslugs' on Monday and Wednesday. They just happen to have the best record in the Eastern Conference so lets pray for some miracles.
On other news, Zdeno Chara was named to play in the All-Star game representing the EC while Phil Kessel has been invited to play in the YoungStars game. They are both going to be on NASN on the 23rd and 24th of January. fivesport will be covering the All-Star game during their regular Wednesday night slot on the 24th. Both games start at 12.
Also, TMB will be reporting is view of the new Reebok jerseys that are being released this Wednesday. The jerseys have already stirred much controversy amongst fans and players alike. They are expected to be more skin tight football-style jerseys that cling to pads. A recent alteration, after complaints, has made them able to be worn tucked-out, instead of as originally planned to be tucked-in. The jerseys will be worn during the All-Star break and will go into every day use at the start of next season.
