David Beckham himself announced his move to the Los Angeles Galaxy today to the press. He signed for five years at £128m (a little short of $250m). Yes thats pounds. In 2003, Real Madrid only offered him £25m. The former England captain went on to thank Spain, Real Madrid and the fans for his time there. Becks will finish up with Real in June and start for LA in August.
After having a rough season in Spain, he decided not to continue on for another two years, and take up the opportunity which is going to be a huge boost to American soccer. He already has strong ties with large MLS sponsors such as Addidas, Gillette and Pepsi. Furthermore, the Beckhams friends circle tends to be oriented down Hollywood way and I'm sure Victoria will fit in just fine with the star lifestyle out on the West Coast.
Don't be surprised if a huge surge in popularity of the MLS occurs just because of Beckham showing up. His career may be dwindling, but he can still draw in crowds. Although this doesn't really create a problem for the New England Revolution, it still means we might lose a few games, with Beckham easily being the most experienced and well paid in the league. It is however, probably the best thing to happen to US soccer since the Women won the World Cup.
Ps. I just liked the picture. :P
